Reflecting - Japanese Ambassador's Residence

Here's a shot I made at the new year's event at the Japanese Ambassador's residence:

Reflecting, by Reed A. George
Nikon Df, Nikkor 35-70mm f2.8 AF-D Lens
iso 100, f4, 1/250 sec.

I enjoyed the combination of the traditional Japanese style teahouse in the background and the pine-surrounded pond, and hot it contrasted with the man in business suit, and especially the suited man reflected in the glass at left of center.

I have another reflection image from the same scene - come back tomorrow!

More From the Leica I Model C and Summar - Architectural Illusions

The building I work in is an amazing feat of architectural design. I don't photograph there very often, but on the day I was testing my new 1931 Leica I, I happened to notice a couple of interesting illusions formed by the architectural glass and surroundings. All were shot with my Summar 5cm f2 and Kodak Tmax 100 film.

The Leica I doesn't have an integrated rangefinder, so it is "guess focus.". The little viewfinder you use to compose feels inaccurate, and obviously doesn't provide for parallax compensation. But, it's a gas to use this little piece of history.

Korean War Memorial Reflecting Pool - Leica M9, 90mm Elmarit f2.8

Korean War Memorial Reflecting Pool, by Reed A. George
Leica M9, Leica Elmarit 90mm f2.8 v.1 Lens
iso 160, f4.8, 1/500 sec.

I went into DC with my friends Alain and Charlie today, to do a little shooting at the National Mall. It was a gorgeous day. While I find the national monuments a bit challenging to shoot, mainly because they've all been done so much, I do like this image. I think the combination of the curved lines, reflections, and people interacting with the environment are just enough to make it a decent composition.

French Quarter Reflection

French Quarter Reflection, by Reed A. George
Leica M6 Titanium, 50mm f1.4 Summilux Lens

I shot this image early one morning in New Orleans. It's a little cliche' to shoot reflections all the time, so I don't. In this case, I like the difference in emotion that it gives, as opposed to shooting the balcony itself directly in the early morning warmth. I like how it has an almost night time feel to it. Don't be afraid of black shadows in your pictures, if that's the emotion you want to communicate.

A Street Portrait From Behind?

I'm in Tokyo still as I write this. Yesterday, on my morning walk, I captured this image.

Street Portrait From Behind, by Reed A. George
Leica M9, Leica 35mm Summicron F2 Lens
iso 400, f8, 1/125 sec.

The only place you can see the subject's face is in the big round mirror on the left. These are place all over around Tokyo for safety (so drivers can see pedestrians and vice-versa). It's pretty cliche to photograph them. But, I've never seen them used in exactly this way.

It would be fun to see this projected or printed very large, to see if capturing the face as a tiny part of the overall composition works or not. I think the lines in this composition work very well.

This is a straight jpeg, out of the camera, but with some cropping in Snapseed.

Underwater Reflection

Underwater Reflection, by Reed A. George
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3, iso 200, f3.3, 1/125 sec

We're all used to seeing reflections on the surface of water - the top surface, that is. This picture shows the reflection of a leaf on the bottom of the water-to-air surface. Cool huh?

Having a camera that I can easily stick under the water allowed me to discover this. The DMC-TS3 is a lot of fun.

I've been on a little diversion with car photography lately. Poster littleMT on mu-43.com has been a great source for me. littleMT posted a few intriguing images of the 2006 GTO shown above.

You saw a post a while back from the same source:

I'm heading out to a car show myself this afternoon (which will be some days old before you read this), after getting a little work done at the office. It is one I've been to before, so I'm struggling to think of ways to do something different with my photography there. The people are always fun. Here's one from 2009:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1, Lumix 14-45mm Kit Lens
iso100, f8, 1/125 sec

Here's another, trying to do something a little different:
Jag on Glass, by Reed A. George
Leica M8, Leica 35mm f1.4 Summilux
iso640, f-stop not recorded, 1/250 sec

So, wish me luck. I'm hoping for some inspiration this afternoon. Will report back :).
